View from the top of Bodenburg Butte in Mat-Su valley.

One of our favorite "no brainer" hikes in the Mat-Su Valley is Bodenburg Butte Trail. Locals refer to this as simply "The Butte". This hike is a great Alaska activity for families and features a combination of trails and stairs. It's approximately 1.5 miles out-and-back and the views from the top are amazing! Just a few miles outside of Palmer, AK, this quick hike is one of the most accessible hikes in the valley. The Butte was formed by the retreating Knik Glacier and stands just over 800 feet tall.

I recommend parking at the Mothershead Lane trail head. There is a parking lot and bathroom at the trailhead. Parking is $5 per vehicle or you can purchase an annual parking pass for only $40. The parking pass also works at many other parks in Matanuska-Susitna Borough. The trail head is well-marked with signs and a map near the parking lot. The trail itself is easy to follow!

When you reach the summit, you are treated to 360° views of the valley. You'll see the Knik Glacier and Pioneer Peak among other valley landmarks. This is a great place to pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the view on a clear, sunny day.
