Before we moved to Alaska we tried to enjoy a few of the tourist activities that would give us a taste of the last frontier. We rented a snowmachine and took a tour with Hatcher Pass Snow ATV Tours and it was an adventure.

We rode snow machines (don't call them snowmobiles in Alaska) and ATV's (side by sides) with Hatcher Pass ATV Tours. Both tours were fun and full of surprises.

In February of 2025, we rented a snow machine and it was a lot harder to ride than expected. Evidently there are different types of snow machines. The rentals are suped up, the tour guide started off by explaining they are the corvette of snow machines. The machine we rented was designed for deep powder in the mountains (as opposed to trail models). My wife and I took turns driving while the other rode on the back. Not only was our guide funny, he knew a bunch of snow machine tricks. He rode it on its side, he popped wheelies (if it had a wheel) and all while taking us straight up the mountain. We went to the peak of a mountain (I'm not sure which one) in Hatcher Pass. We took a little break and enjoyed the view! It was amazing.

In December of 2025, after moving to Wasilla, Alaska we had guests. The guests wanted to see the mountains from the top so we went back to Hatcher Pass ATV Tours and rented a side by side. The side by sides were fully loaded with bluetooth radios, heaters, doors and windows. During the summer Hatcher Pass Road is open to vehicle traffic, but during the winter it is closed to vehicles and only off road vehicles are allowed (ATV's and snow machines). The tour started down Hatcher Pass Road and then we turned up into the mountains. The guide would stop and remind everyone to stay on the trail because the snow was too deep if the ATV went off of the side of the road. The tour was full of breath taking views and scenic mountain peaks. Our tour was during the day since my 6 year old nephew was along for the ride. At night they do offer Northern Lights Tours.
I would recommend their tours! A great staff and a lot of fun!!
